Course runs June 8-July 31, 2009. Cost: ~$1,200. This course is not a prerequisite for BIOC 623d. Instructors: Jim Ware, M.S. and Lisa Rezende, Ph.D. Course Syllabus (pdf file) Course is full; please contact Ellie Warder (520) 621-5903 or warder@u.arizona.edu to put your name on the waiting list. Biology Update 2 (BIOC 623d) This online course focuses on evolutionary ecology and conservation. We will cover some foundations and recent advances in the understanding and applications of evolution, phylogenetics, ecology, and conservation. The course requires 3 local field trips, which may be taken individually or in groups (if feasible). 3 units of graduate-level credit. Cost: $1,097. Course runs June 8-July 31, 2009. May be taken before BIOC 623c. Please be sure to submit the department application as well as the Graduate College Non-Degree application. Secondary Biology Lab Curricula (BIOC 633; online & 1 week in classroom) What are the characteristics that most great instructional activities share? How can you modify an existing activity to increase student involvement, interest, and understanding? How can you make use of current events to communicate with students about the fun and complexity of doing science? And how do national and state science standards drive your curricular choices? In this three-unit class, we will explore these ideas by using and discussing exemplary curricula taken from a variety of sources. The emphasis will be for teachers to adapt classroom activities to reflect the results of research on teaching and learning in science, and to promote greater student understanding in biology. This class is a hybrid (partially online/partially in-classroom) course, which means you must come to Tucson July 19-24, 2009 to participate in the in-classroom activities. On-campus housing for out-of-town participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Your cost for this housing would be ~$26/night. Course runs June 8-July 31. (3 units of credit). Cost: $1,097 plus housing. Instructor: Lisa Elfring, Ph.D. Course syllabus will be available shortly. If you wish to take classes through our graduate NON-DEGREE PROGRAM in Summer 2009, please apply online at: http://www.biochem.arizona.edu/AZ-START/courses.htm on or before May 22. Please be sure to submit all 3 applications for this course (dept application, Graduate College application, and housing application). Muscle Biology for Teachers Selected topics in muscle biology will be covered by focusing on situations commonly encountered in daily life. This online-course will run June 10-July 21, 2009. 2 units of graduate-level credit. Cost: $850. Instructor: Cindy Rankin, Ph.D. Course syllabus (downloadable pdf) If you wish to take classes through our graduate NON-DEGREE PROGRAM in Summer 2009, please apply online at: http://www.biochem.arizona.edu/AZ-START/courses.htm on or before May 22.
