Heather Handl,
a Biochemistry and Molecular and Cellular Biology (BMCB) doctoral
student, and Dmitry Kondrashov,
PhD student in Applied Mathematics working in the Montfort lab,
were among six students selected as IBSB fellows for 2004. Fellows
are chosen from life science graduate students engaged in interdisciplinary
research, and receive free tuition, registration, and health
insurance, in addition to $22,000 annually.
Kenny Friedrich, who completed his PhD this
term, has an NIH postdoctoral fellowship at Emory University
in Atlanta.
Lanielle
Marie Pavlik was born on Thursday, December 18 to Leilani
and Damien Pavlik.

College of Medicine Teaching Awards
Dr. Marc Tischler
received the College of Medicine “Year I Science Educator
of the Year Award”.
Dr.
Mark Haussler was awarded the College of
Medicine “Basic Science Educator of the Year Lifetime
Award”.
And the Department of Biochemistry
& Molecular Biophysics was given the
College of Medicine “Year I Outstanding Achievement
in Teaching by a Department or Course in the Basic Sciences
Award”.
The awards were presented at a ceremony on Thursday, November
6 in DuVal Auditorium. All of the awards are "nominated
and selected by the medical student body and show a commitment
to students through continuing innovation and excellence
in teaching." $5000 is included in the departmental
award.
