Grad Student Angela Amoia
and BCP Grad Student Branwen
Hall have received ARCS Foundation Scholarships
for 2004-2005. ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists)
Foundation, Inc. is a national volunteer women's organization
dedicated to helping the best and brightest U. S. graduate
and undergraduate students by providing scholarships in
natural sciences, medicine and engineering.
Eric
Bultman was awarded the Beckman Scholarship
in February of this year. He is using it to work with John
Enemark in the Department of Chemistry, doing electron paramagnetic
resonance-based studies of sulfite oxidizing enzymes.
Established
in 1997, The Beckman Scholars Program is an invited program
for accredited universities and four-year colleges in the
United States. It provides scholarships that contribute
significantly in advancing the education, research training
and personal development of select students in chemistry,
biochemistry, and the biological and medical sciences.
Heather
Handl, doctoral student in BMCB, is a recipient
of the Philanthropic Educational Organization Scholar Award.
Chosen from among 6,000 applicants, she is one of 85 to
receive the award this year, which provides $8,000 each
to American and Canadian women who are engaged in advanced
study and research.
Gordon
Tollin, Regents Professor (Emeritus) of
Biochemistry, and Chemistry, will be honored by the faculty
of Science and Technology of Umea University (Sweden), which
will confer upon him the title of Doctor Honoris Causa.
Professor Tollin will deliver a lecture at the inaugural
ceremony, which will take place at the University on October
30, 2004. |
