I
Remember...
Receiving a 10-year UA
service award on my 40th birthday, then later the same day being
offered an excellent position at Oregon State University, and realizing
that I had an extremely difficult choice to make.Christopher
Mathews; Professor and Chairman, Department of Biochemistry and
Biophysics, Oregon State University; Corvallis, OR
The great parties that
were put on by Mike Cusanovich. Mike danced at only one of them.Doug
Cork; Professor, Biology Division, Biological, Chemical, and Physical
Sciences Department, IIT; Chicago, IL
Wondering why, after
16-1/2 years, I still recall the organism manduca sexta and the
color of its hemolymph! Thomas
McCloskey; Clinical Pharmacist, St. Mary's Hospital; Grand Junction,
CO
Unrelenting amusement!
(Just a vague sense of pleasantness as it was a bit too many years
ago to have many specific memories.) Michael
Winsten; Physician; New Mexico
Working with radioactivity
(32P) in Dr. John Little's lab with the geiger counter screaming.
Dr. Little rushed in exclaiming I would "fry" myself, but the counter
was in front of the shield and I was not getting exposed. I was
a Junior Honors student.Mitch
Denning; Assistant Professor, Cardinal Bernadine Cancer Center,
Loyola University Medical Center; lmhurst, IL
The kindness extended
by John Law to the incoming graduate students (six of us) in 1981
exemplified the Biochemistry community I experienced for the next
6 years. His personal interest in getting us off to the right start
is something I carry through to my own mentoring activities. Roberta
L. McKee, Ph.D.; Vice-President, Vaccine & Sterile Quality Operations,
Merck Manufacturing Division; West Point, PA
I and my family remember
a pot of poinsettia presented to my family by Dr. Wells on late
December 1985 - It represents his warm heart and his everblooming
dedication to insect biochemistry.Motoyuki
Sumida; Associate Professor, Department of Applied Biology, Kyoto
Institute of Technology; Kyoto, Japan
Working on Dr. Well's
lab with his students and staff was like being a part of a big family.
Some of my best memories happened with my friends in the laboratory.
Omid J. Bendavid;
Medical Student, University of Vermont; Burlington, VT
Dr. Wells had a black
and white cartoon on his office door - it had 12 identical, flat-faced
depictions of himself - with various emotions listed under each
individual drawing (happy, excited, angry, sad, etc) - as I gazed
at it - I couldn't get over how accurate it was! Bridget
Hogan; Ob-Gyn Medical Resident; Indianapolis, IN
We were all poor starving
grad students, so when Shelly Schuster (a grad student of Merle
Olson) at the time was doing studies with rabbit heart mitochondria,
we all took turns as to who would be entitled to a free rabbit dinner.
We wondered if animal disposal ever wondered why they picked up
only rabbit pelts. K.
Ken Yabusaki, Ph.D.; Private Consultant in design and development
of clinical diagnostic tests; San Francisco, CA
Bill Grimes was my advisor.
After relaying a few stories to me about his youngest son, he said,
"He's my favorite toy". He was very easy to talk to. Towana
Deborah Cooper; Medical School; Tucson, AZ
John Law's induction
into the NAS. John
R. Gasdaska; Project Leader for Biolex (a start-up biotech company);
