Native
American Cancer Research Partnership
A
partnership between Northern Arizona University, the Arizona Cancer
Center, and the National Cancer Institute to address cancer disparities
in Native Americans

http://www.nativecancer.org
Dr. Louise Canfield,
professor of Biochemistry and Public Health, is the Principal Investigator
representing the Arizona Cancer Center (AZCC) in this unique partnership
with Northern Arizona University (NAU). The partnership began in
June 2002 and is funded by a 5-year, $7.5 million grant from the
National Cancer Institute to address cancer disparities among Native
Americans.
Although they have historically
had low cancer rates, some cancers are now increasing in Native
Americans while decreasing in the population at large. In addition,
Native Americans are typically diagnosed later and are therefore
less likely to survive cancer than are members of any other ethnic
group.
Logistical and cultural
considerations present significant challenges to conducting the
needed research and providing appropriate treatment for cancer in
Native Americans. Trust and communication are fundamental components
of cancer treatment. The
need for Native American healthcare professionals is critical to
conducting research, implementing cancer prevention measures and
encouraging early diagnosis and treatment in Native Americans.
This partnership aims
to increase the ranks of Native American cancer researchers, doctors,
nurses and other medical professionals by recruiting Native American
students into oncology-related careers. In addition, research in
this grant will focus on possible contributions of uranium mining
to cancer in Native Americans. Students will be trained in cutting-edge
cancer research at NAU and AZCC. Native American students enrolled
in the program will receive laboratory training, coursework and
seminars on cancer and research methodology, as well as mentoring
by health care professionals.
