Animation of Flip-Flop in a Bilayer

 Lecture Notes | 462a Home

This movie shows the process of flip-flop or transmembrane movement of a phospholipid from one half of a bilayer to the other. This is a thermodynamically unfavorable process because the polar head group must pass through the hydrocarbon core of the bilayer. The movie is based on a molecular model of the bilayer generated by molecular dynamic calculations(Heller et al. J. Phys. Chem.97 8343 (1993)).
