Animation of Heme Iron Movement upon Oxygenation

 Lecture Notes | 462a Home

The shift from the deoxy to oxy conformation arises from the fact that in deoxy Hb the iron lies out of the plane of the heme ring, but when O2 binding occurs, the iron moves into the plane of the heme ring. (Based on 2hhb.pdb, C. Fronticelli, unpublished and 1 hho.pdb, B. Shaana, J. Mol. Biol. 17 31 (1984)).
