Introduction - This script shows some aspects of the mechanism of electron transfer from cytochrome c to cytochrome c peroxidase. This is a model system for understanding electron transfer in the electron transport chain [Based on 2pcc.pdb, H.Pelletier & J.Kraut, Science 258,1748(1992)].
face=Symbol>b-helix, an unusual structural feature. (Based on 1LXA, C.R.H.Raetz and S.L.Roderick, Science 270 997 (1995)).

This is the complex between cytochrome c and cytochrome c peroxidas . Note the salt bridges between Lys in cytochrome c and Asp and Glu in cytochrome c peroxidase.

Electron transfer occurs between the reduced heme of cytochrome c and the oxidized heme of cytochrome c peroxidase.

The path of the electron is from the heme of cytochrome c through the polypeptide backbone of cytochrome c peroxidase and involves Ala 194

Ala 193

Gly 192

and Trp 191.

Finally, the electron is passed to the indole ring of Trp 191 and then to the heme of cytochrome c peroxidase.
