2,3 BPG bound to Hb

Introduction - This script shows the binding of 2,3 bisphosphoglycerate (bpg) to a half deoxygenated Human hemoglobin. (Determine which chains are oxygenated and their relationship to bound bpg. (Based on the structure determined by Richard and Mauguen (1993) J. Mol. Biol. 233, 270-274.

BPG is bound between the beta chains of Hb, far removed from the two alpha-chains. Note, that both the N- and C- termini of both beta-chains lie in close proximity to BPG.

This is another illustration of the bound BPG, especially the direct interaction of the ligand with the beta-chains. Notice how BPG is bound at the outer surface the two chains.

Ionic interactions of BPG with His and Lys side chains of the beta-chains stabilizes binding.
