Introduction
Auxin is the most studied and utilized plant hormone. Physiological roles of auxin are well known, but how it is synthesized in plants remains a mystery (Eckardt 2001). Recently a flavin monooxygenase was identified that plays an important role in auxin biosynthesis.
Many pathways for auxin biosynthesis have been proposed. Scientists have failed in their many attempts to obtain auxin biosynthesis mutants. By activation tagging a new auxin biosynthetic mutant (yucca) has been isolated. The mutation occurs in a gene coding for a YUCCA protein that is a flavin monoxygenase (FMO) (Zhao et al 2001).
