Caffeine: A new dawn in Cancer Research

Caffeine and theophylline, both methylxanthine compounds, were discovered to be isoform inhibitors of class I and class II PI3K (phosphoinosidtide 3-kinases). These compounds were also found to block insulin stimulation of glucose transport in certain cells. These discoveries may ultimately be of importance in the treatment of cancer as well as the discovery of the specific role of the p100 d lipid kinase.
