Summary
In January of 2003, Veronique Hanneart and her team announced evidence that trypanosomes once possessed a chloroplast that was lost some time in their evolutionary history. For a protozoan parasite without a trace of chloroplast remnants, the trypanosome is shown to possess a remarkable number of enzymes of plant-related origin. The findings advance our understanding of trypanosome biology and efforts to discover drugs and treatments for trypanosomatid-caused diseases such as sleeping sickness and Chagas' disease. |
