Discovery

The determination of the first eukaryotic PII protein structure has resulted in the discovery of novel plant-specific highly conserved features [1].

The investigators utilized well-developed molecular experimental techniques to express and investigate the A. thaliana PII protein in order to obtain an excellently resolved structure at 1.9 angstroms.

The features unique to plants in the protein-protein interaction domains, surface A and surface B, lead to speculation for novel functions and specificities within higher organisms that are absent in prokaryotes.
