Proceedings of Biochem 462a Honors

Instructions for Authors

The Proceedings of Biochem 462a Honors publishes review papers of particular quality in the broadly
defined area of biochemical structure and function. Papers submitted to the journal should review a sci-
entific problem in which high resolution protein or DNA structures contribute in a fundamental way to the
understanding of the problem.

General

Manuscripts should be prepared double spaced, with 12 point sans serif font (Ariel or Helvetica, for
instance). Manuscripts should be submitted by email to the editor, Chad K. Park - CKPark@u.arizona.edu.
Due date for the manuscripts is November 5, 2007. For review, acceptable formats are .pdf, .doc, .odt, .rtf or .txt. (.pdf is
recommended.) If accepted, the manuscript must be submitted in a word-processing format, i.e., any of the
above except .pdf.

Cover Page

The cover page should contain the title, the name of the author, the author’s affiliation and the word count
for the abstract and main section of the paper (more below).

Abstract

The abstract should be a fully referenced paragraph of 200-250 words aimed at general readers. The
abstract should consist of a 2-3 sentence introduction, followed by a one-sentence statement of the primary
conclusion. The abstract should conclude with 2-3 sentences putting the findings into context.

Introduction

The introduction section should be approximately 500 words of referenced text going into more detail
concerning the background of the work.

Main body

The main body of the work should review the current results upon which the article focuses. This should
be broken down into sections, the names of the sections entirely dependent upon the nature of the work
being presented.

Discussion

The discussion section should be about 500 words and should summarize the work and its context.

Text

Articles should be between 3000 and 4000 words, abstract + introduction + main body + discussion. Do
not count references and figure legends.

Acknowledgments

This section is optional. You may acknowledge anyone who gave you par ticular help or guidance with the
paper. “The author would like to thank his mother for advice and critical reading of the manuscript.”

References

The Harvard reference style should be used. For one author: (Smith, 2001). For two ar ticles by Smith in
the same year the second one should be: (Smith, 2001a). For two authors: (Smith and Smythe, 2006). For
three or more authors: (Thurlkill et al., 2006).

Example: Recently, the pK values for the ionizable groups in proteins were measured using alanine
pentapeptides and potentiometric titrations (Thurlkill et al., 2006).

There should be 20-30 references. Only references to the primary literature can be used (this can in-
clude online-only journals). References to general internet URLs are not acceptable. Exceptions, where the
information is only archived on the internet, must be cleared with the Editor.

The reference list should be alphabetized by author. The reference style is as follows:

Thurlkill, R. L., Grimsley, G. R. Scholtz, J. M. and Pace, C. N. (2006) pK values of ionizable groups in
proteins. Protein Sci. 15, 1214-1218

Note: It is not acceptable to use “et al.” in the references!

Tables

Tables should be arranged one per page in por trait orientation.

Figure Legends

Figure legends should star t on a separate page, should be numbered to match the figures and should
be par t of the text. Figure legends should not be part of the figure file or be on the same page as the
figure!

Figures

Figures should be included as par t of the manuscript, one per page. The number of figures + tables
should be 4-5. Each page should be labeled with the figure number “Figure 1” etc. and nothing else! The
authors of manuscripts selected for publication must provide all the figures as .png (the native Pymol format),
.jpg or .gif files.

The largest dimension of your figure should be 6 inches at 72 pixels/inch = 432 pixels.
