Research Presentation

At the end of the semester each student will be expected to give a short (15 - 20 minute) research presentation. For students who are currently working in a laboratory on campus, this talk will cover the work they are doing in that lab. The format for the talk should cover the following material:

  • The overall goal of the research being conducted in your PI's lab.
  • A brief overview of the specific project you are working on, from a biochemical perspective.
  • The primary techniques and methods you are using to study the system.
  • A summary of the data you have collected (i.e. figures, tables, etc.)
  • A discussion of these results in context of overall goal of the research being conducted in your PI's lab.

For students who have not yet chosen an advisor for their Senior Research Thesis, you are expected to choose a faculty member from the Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics Department (or a faculty who has a joint appointment) in whose lab you would like to do your project and prepare a presentation using the above guidelines. This will require that you meet with the faculty member and discuss what project you might be able to work on, become familiar with the techniques and methods used by the lab, and begin to develop a project proposal. At the time of your meeting with the faculty member, you should ask for reprints of any papers that the PI has published on the topic that you are interested in studying.
