August 27

Lecture 3 notes have been posted and linked to the materials page. Note that the first lab practicum in the lecture notes "Isolating Evolutionarily Conserved Gene Sequences" is not in the textbook. The second lab practicum "Mapping Transcriptional Start Sites" is a scaled down version of Lab Practicum 1 in the book

We will go over these Lab Practicums in class and work through the study questions together, so don't worry if the notes seem to include methods we have not yet discussed (sequence homology searches and cDNA synthesis).

Remember that your answers to
homework 1 are due at the beginning of class.

August 24

I made a few minor changes in the lecture schedule (click here for revised syllabus) and have now updated the materials page to reflect the topics we will discuss this semester. The changes reflect one less lecture on PCR to make room for a discussion on gene therapy and stem cell biology.

If you are on the
ListServe for amgclass you should have received the updated syllabus as PDF attachemnt. If you would like to be included on the ListServr, you need to send me (rlm@u.arizona.edu) your e-mail address and full name so that I can submit it to CCIT.

August 23

Questions for Homework 1 have been posted. Answers are due by the
start of class Tuesday, August 28. You can work in groups, but please answer the questions in your own words. If you have problems understanding the question, or get stuck on terminology, please e-mail me rlm@u.arizona.edu and I will post my reply to the ListServe (you will need to be part of the ListServe to get the reply).

Lecture 2 notes and PDF file have been posted. Click here. Note that the last section of lecture 1 (oligonucleotide synthesis) has been moved to the beginning of lecture 2. Note also that several new study questions covering Cot analysis were added to the end of lecture 1.

A
ListServe function for this class has been set-up by CCIT. If you would like to be included on the class e-mail list (highly recommended), please send me your Full Name and desired e-mail address and I will forward it to CCIT. Send info to rlm@u.arizona.edu

The ListServe is "amgclass" and will not show individual e-mail addresses nor can it be used as an e-mail address. Since the class is relatively small, I set up the listserve so that only the owner (me) can send e-mails to the list, add new members, delete members, etc. This makes it essentially strictly confidential as everything needs to go through me.

Last year I used the ListServe primarily to alert students when new materials were posted on the website so that you wouldn't have to check it all the time, and more importantly, to post my responses to questions I receive by e-mail about the homework assingments and study questions.

August 21

The web site has been overhauled for the Fall 2001 semester, be sure to check this page for weekly announcements and study guide updates.
