April 8, 2008 (Tuesday)

Haves:
I made a mistake counting the number of classes in the semester.  You need to turn in 15 papers (one per week of class).  I have changed the "Syllabus-- Haves" to reflect the correct number.  Sorry about that!

Have Nots:
Here is the worksheet for Dr. Tama:

Pre-Tama Worksheet

March 26, 2008 (Wednesday)
I have not received a worksheet so there will not be one to turn in tomorrow.

I'll try to get one at the last minute and prepar something for you to discuss in class on Thursday.

February 1, 2008 (Friday)

Have nots: Print out this worksheet, fill it out and bring it to the Pre-Osterhout class.

Pre-Osterhout Worksheet

You will turn the worksheet in at the beginning of class.   You will take notes during class and you will be graded on the notes you take.

Febuary 1, 2008 (Friday)

Haves:  Here are some pointers on your experimental proposals:
  • The experiments must not be described by the seminar speaker.
  • If your proposal is the same as the seminar title, you are probably on the wrong track.
  • If you can use the same experiment every week, then it is no good!
  • This experiment is popular: Make mutants, see what happens.  If you use this experiment you have to say what mutants, why these mutants will help answer the question and what the experimental outcomes would be.
  • Do X, see what happens. No matter what "X" is the "see what happens" part is a little vague. You have to tell me what you expect to happen when you do "X", and why this helps answer a question about the research.

January 29, 2008 (Tuesday) 2:00 PM.

Have nots: Print out this worksheet and bring it to class for Dr. Baldwin's lecture on Thursday.  Fill out the worksheet during the lecture, take extra notes on the back if you want and turn in the worksheet after class.

WORKSHEET

I will post the worksheet for the pre-Osterhout class on Friday.

January 24, 2008
(Thursday) 7:55 am

Still no worksheet.

If I get it before class we will use it to guide our discussion.  If not, we will wing it.

I'll let you know in class what we will do for the points.

January 22, 2008
(Tuesday) 2:02 PM

If you are looking for the worksheet,  it's not here!

I have not received it yet.

When I get it, I'll post it right here.

If I don't get it by Wednesday evening we will just wing it in class (Dr. Baldwin and I both do protein folding so I can cover if we have to).

Keep checking!

January 9, 2008
Welcome to Bioc 496a!

For the Spring of  '08, Bioc 496a will be divided into two sections: one for the students who have taken Bioc 462a and one for those who have not. (The "Haves" and the "Have Nots".)

The group that has taken Bioc 462a will attend seminars instead of class.  Your syllabus is the Syllabus - Haves at the left.  The Class Schedule does not apply to you.

For those who have not taken Bioc 462a, the class will be organized around scientific presentations by seven professors.
For each professor there will be a pre-presentation discussion of the scientific problem the week before.  For the pre-presentation classes, you will need to download a worksheet, which will be posted right here.  This will be covered during the first class period and in the syllabus.  Your syllabus is the Syllabus - Have Nots at the left.

Also, come to the first class!
