PhD Program: Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology

The Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology (BMCB) Graduate Program offers students the opportunity for study at the interface of Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology. All faculty in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics participate in this program, as well as faculty from the Department of Molecular & Cellular Biology and some additional joint faculty, giving great breadth to the research of this program.

Biochemistry Research

The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics has a history of strong research in a variety of areas of fundamental importance. Research areas include:
Protein Structure and Function
Molecular Genetics
Metabolic Biochemistry

Coursework

Two options to obtain a Ph.D. in Biochemistry are offered through this program, which involve different course requirements:
For a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, course requirements consist of three core classes in Nucleic Acids, Proteins and Enzymes, and Biological Structure.

For a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology, students take four core courses chosen from Nucleic Acids, Proteins and Enzymes, Biological Structure, Cell Regulation or Genetics.
First year students will also take a 1 credit course on Current Topics in Biochemistry and Molecular and Cellular Biology, which involves seminar attendance and a discussion of the current literature.

BMCB Admissions Requirements

Students admitted to the BMCB Program seeking a Ph.D. in Biochemistry must have an undergraduate degree in biological or physical sciences and have completed course work in mathematics through calculus, organic chemistry, biochemistry, physical chemistry and molecular biology. Students can be admitted with course deficiencies under some circumstances.

Laboratory Rotations

Students in the BMCB graduate program complete two 7 week Laboratory Rotations per semester (4 rotations total) in the lab of any of the participating faculty.
