The Michael A. Wells Undergraduate Research Endowment in Biological Sciences was established by Mrs. Mary A. Wells and family and friends to memorialize the professional accomplishments of her late husband, Michael A. Wells, biochemistry professor and researcher for 40 years at the University of Arizona . It is the desire of the family and friends of Professor Wells to memorialize his leadership and many contributions to undergraduate students in life sciences research. The Fund shall support the research activities of several recipients each year, who will be designated Michael A. Wells Scholars . This support could include the travel of undergraduate researchers to national scientific meetings to present the results of their research, or for any other purpose that recognizes and encourages excellence in undergraduate research. The Value of the scholarship is $1,000 a year, and the number of awards varies.
Recipients shall be currently-enrolled freshmen, sophomores, juniors or seniors in the College of Science Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, who will not graduate before December 2008, or at the discretion of the faculty selection committee, students in closely allied fields of the biological sciences.
It is hoped that recipients of this award will someday contribute to this endowment or other endowments that benefit undergraduate students. An invitation is also extended to faculty colleagues, private citizens, and business leaders to join in demonstrating their value of education by contributing to this or similar scholarship endowments.
