Biochemistry
is the central discipline of modern molecular life science. The
biochemical approach has led to the emerging life science revolution
that promises to establish the next few decades as the era of biology.
Biochemistry, as a discipline and as a department, is central to
the mission of the University of Arizona as we move into the new
millennium. The responsibilities of the University Department of
Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics are many-fold, and include
the following:
|
- to teach
and prepare undergraduate students for positions of leadership
in the new biology that will continue to develop in the new millennium,
equipping them to approach the challenging problems in molecular
life science in the coming decades in agriculture, engineering,
medicine, nutrition, pharmacy, and other areas;
- to train
Ph.D. level scientists and prepare them to assume leadership positions
in shaping the course of molecular life science;
- to train
medical students in the application of basic molecular approaches
to the study of medicine and to equip them to apply their understanding
of molecular life science both to preventive medicine and to their
diagnoses of medical problems and treatment of patients throughout
their careers;
- to facilitate
incorporation of the newest technologies into the research programs
of all practitioners of molecular life science;
- to assemble
and maintain core laboratories that advance the state of the art
in molecular approaches for the benefit of all students and faculty
on the University of Arizona campus;
- whenever
possible, to seize the opportunity to inform the public of the
value of basic biochemical research to learn of the molecular
basis of life processes, and ultimately to intervene in control
of biological processes gone awry;
- to inform
our students of our responsibility to conduct our research with
a clear view to the moral and ethical ramifications of our efforts.

In all of these
activities, the University Department of Biochemistry & Molecular
Biophysics is but one component of the university that shapes our
students' lives. However, the Department should assume a leadership
role in all of these areas, and must work together with sister departments
in the biological sciences to assure that the University of Arizona
maintains its reputation as a leader in the field and advances in
the level of its recognition. |
