Student training

Research Interests

Increasing involvement in training and educational programs has steered my scholarly activity away from active laboratory work. Instead efforts now focus on expanding the training opportunities for under represented minority students to pursue careers in biomedical research. The training program is supported by NIH funding and offers students two full years of support, opportunities to participate in intramural and extramural research, attend scientific conferences, meet with scientists from other institutions and receive mentoring and guidance. The program began in 1999 and through fall 2008, has helped place more than 35 trainees in PhD or MD/PhD programs throughout the country. Some have participated in postbaccalaureate programs to gain additional experience or have worked at the NIH for a year. The program offers outreach activities including tutoring, careers colloquia and research seminars and through these activities reached out to more than 800 students in the period from 2002 to 2009.
