EXPLORE…
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Arizona is on the cutting edge of research and innovation. Research programs in the areas of analytical, biological, organic, physical, inorganic, chemical education and teacher preparation are available. The diversity of research interests, which include such fields as materials science, gas phase and interstellar chemistry, surface science, polymer science, and protein science, gas phase and interstellar chemistry, afford students considerable freedom to explore.
The faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry consistently receive research support from National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense and Department of Energy. Extramural research funding to the Department is currently in excess of $23 million annually, placing it in the top five units on campus based on extramural research support. The research endeavors in the Department are further supported and enhanced by our world-class research support services.
Ph.D. in Chemistry or Biochemistry…
The Department offers Ph.D. programs in Chemistry or Biochemistry. Students in each program may choose to carry out studies with any of the faculty in the Department. There are numerous opportunities for dissertation projects that span interests of several laboratories.
INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH…
The wide breadth of research areas in the Department is further strengthened by a number of interdisciplinary graduate training programs. Graduate students may choose to be affiliated with any number of these (Biological Chemistry Program, Chemical Physics Program, Biochemistry and Molecular and Cellular Biology, Program in Applied Mathematics, Computational Modeling of Biomedical Systems , IGERT Program in Comparative Genomics ), some of which provide research assistantships on a highly competitive basis.
SUPPORT…
Students in the program are supported for the duration of their studies at UA through research or teaching assistantships. In addition, a number of our students have received highly competitive prestigious National Science Foundation predoctoral fellowships, which support them for the duration of their studies in the program. Moreover, students who are engaged in interdisciplinary research through one of the externally funded research programs qualify for training grant support.
