Summary:

Django is a quad-processor Linux computer with stereo visualization capability.

The system will have software for macromolecular structure determination, refinement, visualization, and molecular modeling.

Primary users will be researchers & students using x-ray crystallography, however anyone in the BMB Department may request an account.

To request an account, see Sue Roberts, BSW 526, 621-8171.

Important:

Software on django is to be used only for non-proprietary work.

Do not shutdown or reboot the machine. These actions will result in suspension of your account.

Take care with stereoglasses. Inform me immediately if there are problems.

Do not install any software without informing me beforehand. Installation of unauthorized software will result in suspension of your account. Music files, movies (unless of your molecules) and similar things are not to be stored on the computer.

Backups are not yet working.

Access:

There is a sign-up sheet outside room 541 BSW for console usage. Users may be signed up for two non-consecutive two-hour blocks of time (beginning on the hour). If no one is signed up after you, you may continue to use the terminal. Please log out when you are finished. Users who are logged in, not present, and not signed-up for the console will be logged out if another user wishes to use the system. This may result in the loss of work from your session.

Remote access is available through ssh, sftp, and Xvnc.

From a computer with x-windows display (mac os x, linux, sgi), ssh -Y user@django.biochem.arizona.edu will allow you to run x-windows applications and display them on your screen. (Certain graphics applications will not run remotely.)

From windows computers, access is through vnc.

If you have an inexpensive windows x-term program you like, please let me know about it.

Disk Usage:

Each user is given a quota of 5 gB on the device /mnt/disk2. If more space is needed, see me. Synchrotron images are not to be kept on /mnt/disk2 and will be deleted if I notice them.

Synchrotron images being processed may be placed in /mnt/disk3/xrayimages. They are to be deleted after processing. There is a DVD read/write drive on django. Images may not be kept on django for more than one week. If there are special circumstances (processing problems), let me know so that I do not delete the images.

scratch on /mnt/disk3 is intended as scratch space for CCP4 and other programs. It is not backed up. Keep nothing valuable here.
