X-Ray Approval Procedure

  1. Download and fillout the RC-088 form from the Radiation Control web site.
  2. Get site-specific training from me (Sue)
  3. Send the form to Radiation Control, take the class, pass the test, give me a copy of your certificate
  4. Get training and approval to run the instrument on your own from Andrzej, Sue, or Bill.

Reserving Time on the Instrument

The x-rays can be reserved on a sign-up sheet in room 526. Put your name at the bottom of the list. When it gets to the top, you're next and can collect a data set. You can sign up again after you've finished with your time. Please indicate the approximate amount of time you'll need (an afternoon, a day, a few days).

You will still need to fill out the log sheet in the black notebook whenever you use the instrument. This is for Radiation Control and needs to be a record of actual (not projected) usage.

If no one is on the list, you are free to use the instrument. Please put your name on the sign-up sheet and indicate approximately when you'll be finished with the instrument. If you notice that supplies are getting low, please notify Sue or Andrzej so that they can be restocked.

Policies:

You can not use the x-ray equipment without supervision until you have completed the approval process. All instrument usage must be logged in the black notebook next to the computer. Please note any problems you have in this book. Users are not authorized to bypass the radiation shield. Anyone doing so will have their instrument privileges revoked immediately.

Backup and delete your image files immediately after data collection/data processing is complete. If a subsequent user needs disk space and you can not be found, the oldest image files found on the disk will be deleted (this could be files that are only a few days old.)

You may use the data collection computer (chenier) to reduce data whenever the x-rays are not in use, but persons using the x-rays and detector have priority on this computer. Do not surf the web or run other applications from this computer - it is to be used only for data collection and data processing..

Using the Raxis IV++ Area Detector

Procedures for starting and stopping the generator and low-temperature systems are in a blue notebook next to the instrument. If liquid N2, helium, or other supplies are low, please notify Sue or Andrzej so that they can be reordered. A crystal clear manual and help files are located near the data collection computer. Images can also be processed on kodaly.

The front of the detector face is fragile. Move the detector back when mounting/unmounting crystals or removing/remounting the low-temperature system.

Synchrotron Data Processing

SSRL - Processing with Crystal Clear. No issues. All versions work.

Processing with HKL2000 -make sure site file is current.

APS 14-BMC - Processing with Crystal Clear

Use CC 1.3.0 only. Use the header editor. Change scan rotation direction to -1. 0. 0. Correct the pixel size and beam center (detector parameters). Make sure x-ray wavelength and detector distance are correct. Make sure the header is correct for all scans.

You may use CC 1.3.5 to refine the beam center if you use only one image in the find and indexing.

Processing with HKL2000 - make sure site file is current.
