The x-rays can be reserved at the ARL Biotechnology Computing site. You may reserve the instrument in advance for 24 hours or one experiment, whichever is longer. If the instrument is free and no one has reserved the time, you may use it.
The log sheet in the black notebook MUST be filled in whenever you use the instrument. This is for Radiation Control and is a record of actual (not projected) usage. Log any problems on this sheet and also report problems to Sue or Andrzej.
Procedures for starting and stopping the generator and low-temperature systems are in a blue notebook next to the instrument.
If liquid N2, helium, or other supplies are low, please notify Sue or Andrzej so that they can be reordered.
You can not use the x-ray equipment without supervision until you have completed the approval process. Please note any problems you have in this book and also tell Sue and Andrzej about the problems. Please record any error messages.
Users are not authorized to bypass the radiation shield. Anyone doing so will have their instrument privileges revoked immediately.
You may use the data collection computer (chenier) to reduce data whenever the x-rays are not in use, but persons using the x-rays and detector have priority on this computer. Do not surf the web from this computer or run other applications - it is to be used only for data collection and data processing.
Backup and delete your image files immediately after data collection/data processing is complete. If a subsequent user needs disk space and you can not be found, the oldest image files found on the disk will be deleted (this could be files that are only a few days old.)
The front of the detector face is fragile. Move the detector back when mounting/unmounting crystals or removing/remounting the low-temperature system.
A crystal clear manual and help files are located near the data collection computer. Images can also be processed on kodaly.
